Tóm tắt/ chú giải | : | In 1929 Rev. G. Edward (Ed) Roffe arrived in Luang Prabang, the first Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) missionary to the French colony of Laos. Within the year, his fiancé, Thelma Mole, joined him as his bride. Despite significant challenges in French Indochina in the early twentieth century, the young couple thrived, leaving a noteworthy legacy. Ed Roffe's lifelong collaboration with other mission groups began when the Presbyterian mission turned their ministry in northern Laos over to him and the C&MA. The Swiss Brethren, who had served in Laos since 1902, sent two young ministers to the Roffes in Luang Prabang. They provided leadership for the C&MA-planted Lao Evangelical Church. From the time of their 1929 Christmas honeymoon trip on a rustic ferry up the Mekong River, until their departure with the communist takeover of Laos in 1975, Ed Roffe kept extensive journals detailing both daily life and milestones of ministry. His son-in-law, George Funé, compiled Roffe's journals into this narrative of life along the Mekong, including the founding and significant growth of the Lao Evangelical Church. |
